CMA Announces National Health Care Dialogue
On December 13, 2010, President Jeff Turnbull and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) announced their plans to host a national dialogue on health care in Canada.
Canadian Doctors for Medicare was encouraged by the direction of the CMA's Health Care Transformation document when it was released in the summer at the General Council.
This is our opportunity to have our voices heard loud and clear, reinforcing the overwhelming support Canadians have for Medicare.
But advocating for the status quo is not enough. We all know that the system faces real challenges: long wait times for some services, a lack of coordination, inadequate use of electronic records, and significant disparities in access and outcomes for some populations.
My Better Medicare is an initiative that was launched by CDM to highlight health care innovations that are improving services within our publicly-funded health care system.
Our goal is to showcase successful initiatives that have improved care while respecting the principle of equity across the system. We want to get health care providers and citizens talking abotu how to expand these initiatves so that everyone can benefit from their successes.
In the upcoming CMA national health care dialogue, we plan to put forward recommendations that are evidence-informed and consistent with the values of Canadians. We encourage you to also get involved in our My Better Medicare initiative, sharing your experiences within our Medicare system either as a provider of health care or as a consumer of health care.
It's important that we take this opportunity to have our voices, and those of thousands of other Medicare supporters, hear in the numerous health care conversations being had across the country.
Canadian Medical Association National Health Care Dialogue
On December 13, 2010, President Jeff Turnbull and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) announced their plans to host a national dialogue on health care in Canada.
The CMA will engage physicians and the broader public in their campaign to "transform Canada's health care system into a more efficient, patient-centred model" through an exercise that will include a website for online feedback and town hall meeting across the country.
The CMA is starting the dialogues with three questions:
- The law underpinning our system - the Canada Health Act - dates back to the 1980s. It covers only doctor and hospital care. Do you think it should be broadened to include things like pharmacare and long term care?
- It is important for citizens to feel they are receiving good value for their health care. What would you consider good value?
- Patients and their families play an important part in their health care. What do you think Canadians' responsibilities are, now and in the future, in regards to their health?
In order to participate in the online discussions, you will be asked to create an accounte. Participation will include the ability to comment on topics already listed, creating a topic discussion thread as well as ranking topics.
